Kylian Mbappe: Why I chose PSG over Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe says game-time in Paris Saint-Germain’s “project” was the deciding factor behind joining the French giants over Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old, born in Paris, has enjoyed an incredible rise to stardom with Les Monégasques which led to Europe’s biggest clubs clambering for his signature.

But among those linked were Real Madrid, who the teenager supported as a child, and PSG. In the end, he chose to stay in Ligue 1 and team up with new signing Neymar.

Following France’s 4-0 victory over the Netherlands on Thursday – in which he registered his first goal for Les Bleus – Mbappe explained why the six-time Ligue 1 champions instead of Los Blancos.

“I’m very happy to have joined such a big club,” he said, as reported by Football Espana.

“It’s the perfect project for me to keep improving and learning. I’ll be playing with great players who have won everything in France and some that have won things abroad.

“I have a lot to learn and show. I chose PSG several weeks ago. It was the best project for me to improve. I’ll play, that was the first criterion [for my move].”

A graduate of Monaco’s academy Mbappe, who made his debut in the 2015/16 campaign, featured across 44 matches last season scoring 26 goals and creating a further 14.

Of those appearances 29 have come in Ligue 1 where his 15 goals placed him fifth in the race for the golden boot won by PSG marksman Edinson Cavani (35).

But his efforts helped them win their first championship since 2000 as well as reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Yet to feature this season under Leonardo Jardim he’s expected to make his PSG debut when they visit Metz on September 8 a fews before opening their Champions League campaign away to Celtic.
